Special speed limit orders

How a local speed limit is set or changed on an Irish road.

Speed limits on public roads are set as default (national) limits or altered by special speed limit by-laws made by the local authority. A reduction in a posted limit is a record that a road's safe operating speed is lower than the default — but a limit reduction alone does not address a physical hazard on the road.
