Sight Distance and Stopping Sight Distance

These standards define the minimum unobstructed view a driver needs to safely react to hazards or stop their vehicle.

Sight distance is the length of road visible ahead of a driver. Stopping Sight Distance (SSD) is a critical design parameter, ensuring drivers have enough distance to perceive a hazard, react, and bring their vehicle to a complete stop before impact. These calculations consider vehicle speed, road gradient, driver reaction time, and road surface friction.
